Maybe it’s that the first interracial kiss on TV between Uhura and Kirk was only “allowed” to air because William Shatner purposefully went cross-eyed directly at the camera when filming the ‘alternate takes’. He knew that if there was a viable alternative, then the studio would use it.
He simply made sure there wasn’t one.
He’s quite the cheeky devil. And for a noble cause.
Less noble, but still fun, is Liam Neeson needing multiple takes in a scene from “Third Person”. In that moment, he got to make out with Olivia Wilde. Wouldn’t ya know it, just couldn’t get it right.
Sorry, what were the alternate takes about? Did they not have the kiss?
He went out of his way to purposely…
…any take that did not include said kiss.
Possibly the only thing Shatner and Nichols ever agreed on was the importance of that shot, too.
Nana Visitor was pregnant with Alexander Siddig’s baby during the filming of DS9, that was the reason for Kira being pregnant with Kirayoshi
And during 1 particular scene in Apocalypse Rising she yells at Bashir This is still your fault and an in-joke
The moment:
One of the things I love about scifi is writers can just go, “whelp this actor’s gonna be suddenly pregnant for a while, because… reasons.”
This is a cool one I had no idea
Nurse Chapel = Number One = ship’s computer = Lwaxana = Gene’s wife = Majel Barrett = First Lady of Star Trek
With Lucy as Star Trek’s savior.
Nurse Chapel = Number One = ship’s computer = Lwaxana = Gene’s wife = Majel Barrett = First Lady of Star Trek
I think the order should be …
MajelBarrettHudec = Gene’swifegirlfriend = Majel Barrett = Number One = Nurse Chapel = ship’s computer = Gene’s wife = Lwaxana = First Lady of Star Trek… as controversial and questionable as her beginnings were and her relationship with Gene while he was married at the time, I still love what she became and what she did and represented for the Star Trek franchise during her lifetime. She is an amazing woman that came out of a difficult period for women and minorities that would have had to fight every step of the way to become who she was.
Seth macfarlane in ENT.
And the other way around.
Missing a few
A dozen or so, but didn’t want to overload.
David Gerrold did not write the “no tribble at all” line and hated it. He also thought Shatner was a dick, which is why tribbles keep hitting him in the head in the scene where he opens the quadrotricale bin- Gerrold was up above throwing them at him.
I highly recommend his book on the making of The Trouble With Tribbles. Aside from being of interest to Star Trek fans, it is the best book on the TV industry ever written. It still applies today.

Gene Roddenberry, Spock, Scotty and McCoy, were all WW2 veterans, as were other regulars.
I wonder how long till we see WWIII veterans in a ST show
We’ve already seen at least one:
We likely already do, we just don’t know which ones it will be yet.
This may not be very esoteric to some, but one of my personal favorites is that the transporter operator in the TNG episode Second Chances is Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African-American astronaut in space.
And then this fantastic behind the scenes photo during the shooting of that episode, where she is visited by Nichelle Nichols. Mae credits Nichols’ Uhura as the inspiration for becoming an astronaut and I imagine it had to be dizzying to get to be on Star Trek and actually meet her hero in the flesh.
But even if you already knew all that, another interesting piece of information is that this was the first and only time Jemison acted. She appeared as herself in several different documentaries over the years (including one alongside William Shatner), but she never acted again… until 2023. 30 years later, she got a second acting credit as the voice of an out-of-control phone app in Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.
Mae Jemison has become one of MY inspirations in life.
Always great to hear and read stories like this from the shows. Thanks for sharing!
Thats super cool. Thanks for posting
This post was made to bring this sort of info out of the woodwork. Knew the first part, but glad to learn of the latter.
James Doohan was missing the tip of one/some fingers on one hand, so he always stood off centre from camera so he could hide his hand behind his body.
Did a fair job disguising, but really just should have run with it.
You also get a good look at it when he’s pulling the bloody uniforms from the vent in the dining hall in The Undiscovered Country.
He’s an engineer - of course he’s missing fingertips!
he’s a combat wounded veteran starfleet navy engineer. it’s miraculous only two fingers got mangled.
er, ww2 lol, friendly fire war wound: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Doohan
Scotty took six fucking rounds from a machine gun.
note: friendly fire isn’t. friendly. fucking sucks to get lit up by your own.
How do you have an infrared kiss what the fuck
Saavik. First played by a relatively unknown Kirstie Alley in ST2. Paramount neglected to include a sequel clause in the contract and her agent wanted too much while Paramount low-balled the offer. So they cast Robin Curtis in the role for ST3, and without much to do they left her behind on Vulcan in ST4 while the TOS crew went back to earth (a deleted scene said she was pregnant with Spock’s baby when she helped with his pon farr in the previous movie). Saavik would never be conanically seen again, but Robin Curtis would appear in the 2-part TNG episode Gambit. Saavik was considered to be the traitor Vulcan in ST6 but they could never write it in a convincing way, so they rewrote it to a new character Valeris.
There’s long been speculation about some behind the scenes drama to throw in a wrench.
That doesbt seem like drama as much as someone with a sense of humor.
Looks like shes just acting “scandalous” during a “professional” group shot. Dude is tossing bunny ears on shatner at the same time.
Also totally plausible. That the shot exists is what brought up some small rumors/mild speculation.
She is known for her humor. Does a bang up job on Cheers and then follows it up by joining the wackiest religion ever?
Lady knows how to commit to a bit.
What you did there. I see it.
Between the data one above, and this obannon one (which i have bookmarked previously) i am about to stop using emojis and just start using trek shots.
The Picard Maneuver and the Riker Maneuver.
Pull down your shirt and swing your leg over the chair.
Then there’s the Geordi maneuver:
And the Riker Ship maneuver:
Then there is the elusive double Riker into a Picard. That’s doing the Riker lean onto a captain’s saddle while yelling “Riker”.
I grinned and giggled when I saw that.
It was an ad lib, too. And Frakes was directing.
Definitely can’t help but hear that upper gif
This one is pretty well known: Ashley Judd’s first on-screen kiss was with Wil Wheaton in the TNG episode “The Game.” Ensign Lefler was also briefly in “Darmok.”
The two of them dated for a while as well.
That the Christopher Pike character from The Original Series was played by Jeffrey Hunter
His portrayal in this role appeared in the first episode to be filmed in the 1965 pilot episode of the series. This episode was rejected at first and a new first episode was reshot and recast with William Shatner.
The Christopher Pike character was reimagined by reusing the footage of the original pilot episode in the later episodes of ‘The Menagerie’ in 1966. The Christopher Pike character in the beep chair from these episodes was played by a different actor.
In later years, the Christopher Pike character was often referenced in later movies and as a main character in the modern series ‘Discovery’ and ‘Strange New Worlds’ where he is played by Anson Mount.
The original actor Jeffrey Hunter would never live to see any of this fame or notoriety of his original character because he tragically died in 1969 from a movie stunt accident when he was 42 years of age, four years after he had appeared as the original Christopher Pike. He never lived to see the fame and popularity of the Star Trek franchise or the character that he had originally played.
It’s one of the saddest things I ever discovered about the actors and people that were part of the whole Star Trek franchise.
And in that pilot, Leonard Nimoy’s Spock character hadn’t yet been decided to be emotionless, thus even though they tried to reuse as much footage as they could from the pilot in TOS (to save costs:-), they had to be careful to not ruin that carefully built up cannon for him.
Love it. Was hoping to see this one. Begat the original “First episode” argument.
The sad part I think about with Jeffrey Hunter was that he was born in 1926 while Shatner was born in 1931 … Hunter was just five years older than Shatner. So there was no reason why Hunter could have grown old or long enough to see what would have happened to Star Trek and maybe even go back and reprise his role as the original and first Star Trek captain. Apparently in his bio, he was like every other actor at the time and constantly looking for starring roles and parts that could make him famous. He would have become renown in the Star Trek community, events, comic cons and the whole bit for many years after. And even added to his career by being part of Star Trek like what happened to Shatner whether he wanted it or not.
I can’t help but think of that possibility when I see Anson Mount playing the role of Christopher Pike.
Maybe Hunter did make it big and become Star Trek famous in an alternate universe.
An unfortunate case of circumstance and tragedy, as there was plenty of room for upward momentum.
Anson Mount wound up being an incredible stand-in for the modern re-imagining in the lead up to TOS. Also a surprisingly close casting for looks. Seems we lucked out that he didn’t end up landing Lorca.
ITT: people who think the viggo story is esoteric and those who do not. Both are responding accordingly. Fascinating
Alexander Siddig, Doctor Julian Bashir is the great-grandson of…
Muhammad Ahmad bin Abdullah bin Fahal (Arabic: محمد أحمد بن عبد الله بن فحل; 12 August 1843 – 21 June 1885) was a Sudanese religious and political leader. In 1881, he claimed to be the Mahdi and led a war against Egyptian rule in Sudan, which culminated in a remarkable victory over them in the Siege of Khartoum. He created a vast Islamic state extending from the Red Sea to Central Africa and founded a movement that remained influential in Sudan a century later.
“My great-great-grandfather fought in World War I.”
“Cool, mine was a messianic figure who freaked out the British so much that they destroyed his tomb and threw his bones into the Nile.”
…and the nephew of malcolm macdowell
Ooh. New trivia!
Thanks
