Dammit Sony, you just had to improve upon it and then you went and fucked it up with the Vita :/
laughs in Steamdeck
Nah dude OG gameboy all the way
Nope you forgot about the Game.Com, the best VR experience after the Virtual Boy that 1993 could offer
nah bro it was Nokia N-Gage
Vita was fine. Sony just didn’t support it and stuffed it up with propriety memory cards which caused low sales and a lot of big games for it to be cancelled. It also launched at a time where mobile games were becoming more mainstream and less people wanted dedicated handhelds. Although post-Switch, the handheld market has seen a bit of a boom especially with Steam Deck etc.
I do love my Switch Lite tho. Never had a single issue with it, while my wife’s normal Switch can’t keep working joycons to save its life. Vampire Survivors does bog the framerate occasionally though.
What’s wrong with the joycons on your normal switch? The drift thing?
Yeah, she’s warrantied them two or three times. It was always either drift or the damn things just not working for whatever reason. Eventually she gave up, I couldn’t blame her.
Pick up a pair of “Gullikit joycon Hall FX sensors” and never worry about drift again. Hall FX sensors are damn near the perfect joystick
I’ve seen the pair go for ~$20
Cool, thanks! Never really thought about 3rd party stuff, it being Nintendo and all. I’ll give em a shot!
+1 for Gulikit sticks, I’ve revived five different sets of joycons for friends and family at this point. Install is a little fiddly but just go slow and don’t let anything dangle.
The drift is very real and inevitable. The joycons have such a high failure rate.
The Vita stands as the best when hacked and paired with a sd2vita.
I have mine stored somewhere. Got any websites to help with the hacking?
Now, but when it was released, it sucked. I think it’s biggest downfall was they didn’t add a UMD drive to it so it wasn’t backwards compatible with any of the PSP games. If they kept that, it might have sold well.
Not to mention those stupid overpriced memory cards.
I enjoyed my Vita for its portability, and I didn’t even jailbreak it to emulate games. For a long time, any indie dev releasing on PS3 would put their game on Vita as well.
Idiot. All I need is a Nokia with snake
I never had a Vita so idk what was wrong with it. I did have two variations of the PSP and the only thing that was bad about it was the available library. There wasn’t a lot of really good games for it. The metal gear spinoffs, SOCOM, and Work Time Fun are all I even really remember playing more than just once or twice.
Nah, DS Lite was the sweet spot. Best of both worlds with GBA and DS game selection, pocket sized.
Shame the hinges crap out on it though.
Sweet spot for the Nintendo world 100% agreed, but not for portable gaming at large. Nintendo made a lot of concessions on raw power to bring price down
PSP, while more expensive, hit a solid sweet spot between portability and power. It truly felt like you were playing on just a small console rather than a DS which gave the distinct feeling of playing on something “portable”
My only experience with the PSP was the original one with the weird discs; i found it severely lacking in games
Huh excuse me?! Have you seen the handle on the GameCube?
I said a read portable console!: a smartphone
No psp was complete junk. The psp version of games were so bad compared to the original. The disks were expensive, shit selection, one analog stick and a bad one.
Gameboy sp was the best handheld.
You could back a PSP so easily and play so many non PSP games it’s crazy. It was by far the best. Except later I think you could do the same thing with the Vita and it was a flat upgrade all around sooooo
And missing a pair of shoulder buttons. PSP is trash and always has been.
PS Vita is a straight upgrade
PS Vita is a straight down
upgradeFTFY
How? UMD was shit, vitas display was a huge upgrade. The analogue sticks were better… I gifted my son the Vita last year and it still holds up. Couldn’t do that with my PSP cause it’s broken.
The UMD, was decent enough, it was optical after all. The problem was they took it away for a gimmicky rear touchpad and in turn locked out all backwards compatibility with PSP games. Which in turn, led to its ultimate downfall because it didn’t have the big backfill of a library when it REALLY needed it to head off the rising smartphone competition (Vita released in 2012)
Display and sticks were better yea, but nothing groundbreaking that couldn’t have been included on a 4th gen PSP iteration.
Also the UI was shit, they replaced the nice XMR/CBR (Whatever it was called) with those stupid bubbles.
A umd drive in a vita would’ve been ridiculous.
Any digital purchases made on the psp store were honoured on the vita and you didn’t face to but them again.
Even so, nowadays it’s just straight up the better option with adrenaline being able to play every PSP game natively, not emulated. The vitas resolution is also a straight 2x scale so the scaling is perfect and allows for an LCD grid shader if you want it to look even more like a PSP.
I tried playing my PSP again a few days ago but that display has deteriorated soooo much. The constant motion blur like qualities is insane. It was already bad when new but it’s almost unplayable now and you’d be hard pressed to find a PSP anywhere near what it looked like on release now I imagine.
No no… They have a point.
I love my PSP. Best console ever. But the vita could do all of it and more.
- dual touchscreens
- OLED screen
- no disk drive
- AR camera setup
- cell data and fast wifi
It just also was so powerful that game developers didn’t want to put the effort in but not powerful enough to straight port games to.
It had solid state storage that was proprietary though that was overpriced and impossible to find.So no games to support it. No sales to bring down production costs…
It floundered hard. But as my emulator handheld with mods to let it take SD cards it’s easier to pull out than almost anything else and a catalog of PlayStation games and more… It was an upgrade just Sony failed it.You forgot the best upgrade, dual joysticks!
It was a gimmicky touch pad, the no drive is a negative, without that there was 0 backwards compatibility with the PSPs large library. Which I peg as the main reason it floundered so hard
OLED, 3G and better wifi could have easily been added to a 4th gen PSP iteration
They could play PSP games big issue was buying them again and not being able to download them on the unaffordable memory.
If it had games constantly coming out like the switch did when it first launched it would have been very similar. And if it had storage that was affordable doubly so.
Instead it had the pricing of full consoles for games and few of them from the development costs. Sony failed to bring the games Nintendo does and that killed it far worse than a lack of a spinning disk drive that skipped if you shook it hard enough.
I mean yea that’s kinda my point, Sony had to have known they were not in fact Nintendo and were definitely not going to keep up with the amount of games Nintendo published. Keeping the drive would have been a cheap way to get a running start on the library.
They got greedy and thought people would be happy to re buy PSP games AND fork over money for their insanely priced memory sticks
They actually also made the go and a literal gaming cellphone at this time. I think they were trying to move away from the disks (they were up against the DS) and tried lots of things but put all the money in the hardware instead of the games.
Cause they are like Nintendo when you look at their main consoles. It’s a great piece of hardware. Truly impressive and worth being praised for it but it failed super hard. And it’s not they didn’t keep up they just didn’t use enough of the budget to pay developers to develop the games, and thought people would just be excited about the hardware like they were.
The xperia play was not made by PlayStation and in fact PlayStation did not like the idea that they were using the PlayStation brand. That was all on big boy Sony and Sony Ericsson.
Wait what are you on about? You can play literally ever PSP game ever with adrenaline.
