If this is the case, then the disgust at fusions of different types can be explained as heterophobia. Gems only accept gay relationships, hetero sex is disgusting to them.
i dont think each type of fem is a different gender, as they use that as names and female genders. the rest of what you said does make a lot if sense, but fusion is a representation of strong relationships, not sex. so its even worse, they think it’s disgusting for different types of gems to even be good friends
