Ethiopia has one of the lowest smoking rates in the world. How? It’s banned in public places, it cannot be flavoured, warning labels must be included, and there are high taxes.

How do we do the same for Twitter? We ban the app from being downloaded from the apple/play store (downloading an apk is fine). We prohibit Twitter from showing ads to users in the country. We require a warning on each page load that Twitter promotes Nazi content, and we tax Twitter just to do business in the country.

If Twitter doesn’t agree to those terms, they can stop doing business in this country. They still have the option of getting revenue from blue checkmarks, so it’s not like it’s impossible for them to operate. They just have to follow certain restrictions on how they conduct business, just like Cigarette companies have to.

  • You’re right, the difference being a few weeks is silly. There should be a tier system instead. Like 15-, 16-17, 18-20, 21-24. If you’re an old fart, you can only date over 25. If you’re within one of the tiers, you can date within the same tier and maintain any relationship that was started when you were previously in the same tier. Something like that, but with a little more polish.

  • And furthermore, Captain Planet told us all what to do in the 90s. Abolish the conditions of Capital which allow greedy billionaires to destroy the environment for personal enrichment. We didn’t pay enough attention to realise what we had to do, because we’re media illiterate. It’s not just Captain Planet, there’s thousands of books, movies, songs, and TV shows that tell us what the problems are in society, and we still don’t fix them!

Yeah, if you have a disease that impairs you ability to process facts. When a disease is impairing your judgement so you can’t see the facts, believing in facts is impossible. You can’t see them. That’s like asking a blind from birth person to believe in the colour red. When you tell a severely depressed person to believe in facts, they just feel frustrated that they can’t see the facts. They feel like you’re lying to them. It’s counterproductive.

If you tell them to believe in nothing, well that’s easy, because nothing is precisely what they can see. It doesn’t feel like a contradiction to them. They are acknowledging the absurdity of what they must do and then doing it.

Is that your advice to depressed people who think life is hopeless? Belief in things without having real evidence?

Yeah, that’s exactly what drag was trying to say. Believing in things without evidence forms an important PART of a treatment plan. It should also be supplemented by exercise, medication, social activities, and CBT if possible.

  • Most people can’t understand the themes of works from their own culture. How many American conservatives think the Matrix supports their ideas, and brag about taking the “red pill”, not realising it’s an estrogen pill? How many people watch Rick and Morty, and proceed to idolise Rick? Or the same with Sherlock, or House? How many people think Thanos did nothing wrong?

So much of our popular media criticises the flaws inherent in capitalism. Iron Man does it. Star Wars does it. Why don’t we live in a society of socialists? When Starship Troopers was first released, it bombed. Because most people couldn’t tell it was satire. It took years for people to catch on.

Hell, most christians read the Bible and think Jesus was white! It is literally their religious identity, and they can’t be bothered to understand it.

Drag doesn’t think literacy is one dimensional. But drag does think that most people don’t meet the standard for being a functional person in any culture. If most people were literate, then most of the kids who grew up watching Captain Planet would be vegan and carfree. But they aren’t, because they fundamentally don’t understand how to think about the entertainment media they consume.

And by the way, it’s a high dragon, not a horse.

  • Most people are illiterate. Literacy is a skill with levels and most people don’t actually ever reach the level required to be a fully functional person.

This meme is a great example. Most people don’t actually reach Ogre’s level of literacy. Yeah, it’s played for laughs in the fact that Ogre is smarter than the average human, but Ogre is also completely correct about the level of literacy we should expect of people, in a perfect world.
