Data. Lor.

Lore.

Data and Lore are 2 different kinds of information.

That just occurred to me.

Data was good with information, logic and reasoning, etc.

Lore was good at people, colloquialisms and stuff.

Whereas, irl, data is just a collection of facts, a store of knowledge. lore is the myths and legends we tell ourselves, and not necessarily fact.

It’s really unfortunate that Lore was a villain.

As Charles Fort said, systems of thought are invariably mutually antagonistic.

Everybody thinks that their system of thinking is the one and only true system, and all other systems are wrong and bad. (Which simplifies thinking I suppose.) Except luminaries like Charles, of course.

The writers clearly think that Data represents the good system and Lore one of those other systems.

it could have really been an interesting counterpoint- Data being cold and logical, Lore being… more empathetic. That duality. maybe leading to a sort of balance; since neither is useful without the other.

But nope. they had to make Lore a manipulative asshole.

even if Data didn’t mean to be cold, exactly.

Data is also objective or at least organised information, whereas lore is somewhat unreliable information, as it’s characterised by oral tradition. (Also if you think about the word “folklore” the connotation of factual isn’t too strong.)
