How can you become obese involuntarily? Someone barges into your home every 2 hours and shoves food down your gullet?

It’s not very common but some people do have metabolic disorders or thyroid issues that make it extremely difficult to not gain weight, no matter what they do.

It’s anecdotal but I knew a man who joined the Navy at 18 - thin as a rail. He had some sort of reaction to one of the jabs he was given during boot camp.

He put on 200+ pounds in less than a year - he spent only a few days in the hospital, so no months in bed just eating. Once he was discharged from the hospital and Navy, he went home and went to work. Just living like he had before but just kept putting on weight.

No diet he tried worked. Even exercise and dieting (which works for most people) made no difference.

His case is definitely an outlier but it does happen.

well yknow how depression and homelessness isn’t voluntary … or gambling addictions, alcoholism … yeah … obesity can be a disorder in the same way

we’re all struggling through life in different ways - just because you can avoid over eating doesn’t mean everyone has that inate ability right this second

Well you can have a situation where someone only has money or time to consume food that is poor in nutrients but rich in calories, so they either die of not consuming enough nutrients or they gain weight by consuming too many calories.

And then there are mental illnesses that fester since mental healthcare is a mess.
