So if you want to discuss the story’s details, maybe we should agree on those details, and you can give us something more than “trust me bro”.

Also, eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable, and traumatic events make it even less reliable, and when you’re talking about a kid it’s even harder to get straight. I ask my kid what they said 10 seconds ago and they can’t give me a straight answer. Maybe just fucking lay off the child. Jesus christ.

Lemmy isn’t a monolith, and understanding that the fediverse has set itself up as an alternative to centralised platforms, I don’t think we should be surprised when trolls who tend to get banned on those other platforms find their way here.

As someone with a very mildly unusual name, I can tell you that it doesn’t matter whether a system could or could not meaningfully represent the name. Often the people or systems just refuse to acknowledge any deviation from what’s expected. Sometimes databases are written to enforce arbitrary grammatical rules that make my name impossible to write, or the people using the systems will just “correct” the “error” without telling me. I don’t mind that much but our normative systems just love to homogenise us.

The problem here is that baby formula is something people need to feed their babies, and our society has decided that if you don’t have enough made up arbitrary tokens, you don’t get to feed your baby.

If I don’t know 100% that the person I saw stealing baby formula is doing it as part of a crime ring, then I’m not going to ruin a parent’s life because they did what they needed to feed their baby. Even then if the crime ring is selling it at a discount then I don’t particularly care to stop them either.

If you want to tell people that shoplifting is such a problem and you want to focus on the crime rings and ignore the poor people, your priorities are messed up. Also none of you know how to source your claims. Also, don’t start with some BS about how nobody ever does it to feed their baby, that’s just false.
