I think this definitely reads way worse than it is. I grew up in small town Iowa, and most adults from my town would not handle upscale and fancy well. It would be like if I went to Buckingham and was expected to know proper etiquette.

My clients are internal business users, not actual external customers. Words have meanings, and it’s important to use the correct ones when communicating important information.

No. How about you fucking pay me and suffer consequences instead? If you can’t afford to pay thousands to every affected individual and continue being a business, you don’t get to be a business anymore. Equifax and Change Healthcare are two companies I did not opt into using, but had to, and they both fucked up and lost all of my most sensitive information. People should be in jail and I should have thousands of dollars more in compensation. Instead, I got $7 from Equifax and offered free monitoring from CHC. Make it so it’s debilitating when sensitive information is lost, and maybe places would take security more seriously.
I would quit on the 6th day. I’d show up to my shift for 5 and then not be there on 6. I guess I’d do that until I got fired, but I would never be there on the 6th day.

Most of Coheed and Cambria’s albums follow along with a graphic novel written by Claudio, the lead singer. I’ve never read them and don’t know the story, but if you listen to an album start to finish, you can tell that it’s more than just lyrics.
Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism… that really gives the songs a big boost.
That’s different than not knowing anything about OP. That’s not knowing tech or not knowing extreme specifics about OP. The giver knows OP well enough that they thought a tech gift fits them, which makes sense. Most people don’t think twice about smart devices and security because most people are ignorant.
There may have been lots of thought put into the gift, like OP likes tech, perhaps they’re into music, maybe they have a Google phone, or they have lots of fancy gadgets. A popular smart speaker sounds like a good gift for that person to someone that’s not security minded.
I work in IT and my whole family knows I’m privacy centric. None of them would have even thought about the privacy concerns with a smart speaker. That doesn’t mean that they don’t know me, it’s that they are ignorant to tech and cyber security. It’s not a stretch to think that OP’s gift giver knows OP will enough to give them an expensive gift but didn’t think of all of the implications, because that’s foreign to them.
I did this once on a high school trip years ago. We were all hanging out in a hotel after an event, and being highschoolers we were all running around. When the chaperones were coming around to rooms to do head counts, one of our buddies not from our room hid in the shower. When asked where he was at we said that he wasn’t in our room. They didn’t believe us, so we did the, “yea, he’s hiding in our shower” and made a deal to go out of our way to prove it. They thought we were just being dumb teens and left.
That appears to be a gray area depending where in the EU. If there is signage, the sidewalk is not the primary focus of the video, and the video is not shared, it sounds like it is in legal in a lot of places. Other appear to be more strict. Doorbell cameras appear to widely accepted, for example.
Likely, if I were to ever get around to getting a camera, I’d set motion zones on my property line and record when triggered.
Technically, it is a skill issue though, but requires borderline perfection to achieve safe code. It’s still a bad argument and detracts from progress in an area where it’s sorely needed. Correct me if I’m wrong, but my understanding is that everything unsafe is because the logic used left something exposed where rust has rules in the language the prevents those had coding practices. C is inherently unsafe, it just doesn’t have built in safe guards to keep the dev from using it wrong.
