I would like to use a smart watch with health tracking (e.g pulse, steps, sleep tracking) but I don’t want to setup an account and send my data to a proprietary cloud.

Can I sit host ‘tge cloud’.

If not, can you recommend any watch which i can just sync data from watch to my Linux laptop (again: no account, etc)

Thanx

    Check out https://gadgetbridge.org/

I bought a Garmin 265 a couple of months ago after moving from iPhone/Apple Watch to GrapheneOS. I have never installed the Garmin app or created an account there. Most features of the watch works normally.

+1 to Gadgetbridge. Some smartwatches like CMF Watch Pro 2 by Nothing does not require the official app to set up the watch

Do you happen to own one? If yes, how do you feel about it?

For example, in the PineTime there is a heart rate monitor, but it’s too slow and imprecise. Notifications work great, and the battery lasts 20 days or more. How about the Bangle.js 2?

I do own one and I love it, but I have similar complaints about the heart rate monitor. I just don’t use it enough to have it matter. sleep tracking works pretty okay, though.

I wouldn’t waste your time with a half ass product. I’ve done quite a bit if research into this. I find Garmin to have the best overall watches with a good privacy policy last I looked. Make fake account and log no important info in that matches you such as age leave blank and other main identifiers. Even obscure gender if you want. Opt for a watch that has no microphone and disable gps if you want. Check out the Garmin tactix 7 I believe us their current. Ability to completely wipe the watch with a button. Stealth mode with no wireless connectivity for military. Its very legit in how it operates. 28 day battery life even longer if you get the solar glass.

Shop second hand for price reduction. Their warranty is second to none, don’t like that color they change it, don’t like the band they’ll send you any bands you want, have an issue, total replacement, they even let you keep the original until the new one arrives so your not out anything. Not a shill just a no frills company from my experience.

This is a project I’ve been interested in for a bit. It looks like it will have a pretty good feature set out of the box, and with everything about it being open source I’m sure there will be an API for it at some point too. The price is a bit on the expensive side but is honestly pretty comparable to most current gen smartwatches tbh.

Thx. Interesting. But a bit to expensive.

Is there really no watch i can just connect to my pc and transfer data?

On android opentracks, fitotracks etc are great applications.

The open source market for smart watches sucks. Gadget bridge doesn’t really work for any “new” (i might be wrong here) devices.

Luckly Garmin watches are top notch and the software side its pretty good. You can not install the app and manually download all activities files via USB if you like.

Most newer Garmin devices should work since 0.82 (and earlier with nightly). It’s not feature complete compared to using Gadget Connect but should be enough for most use cases, unless you really care about the social/awards aspect and some of the deeper metrics (although if you’re handy with SQL you can handle that yourself).

Not being able to set an event date and have “daily suggested workouts” follow that is my only annoyance, although I’ve been happy just using the defaults for now.

Good to know! I tried, but I guess I need to uninstall Garmin connect first…
