  • Same shit with American custom forms. On the one hand, they threaten you with Armageddon if you fill out the form incorrectly, on the other hand, they only allow plain letters, numbers, and a handful of special characters. Nobody there has the capacity of the mind that maybe a name cannot be correctly represented with that tiny subset of characters. So it is simply impossible to fill out that form without breaking the law. And it is a customs form, so they should know that people filling it out are most likely foreigners.

  • The two issues with making soup without a lid: heat loss and evaporation.

The first is important as the soup must simmer, not boil. With a lid, you can easily create a mostly uniform heat, without it will probably be too cold at the top, and, as you have to feed more heat, it will most likely be too hot at the bottom.

The second is not unimportant, as you usually cook a good soup for quite some time (my beef broth takes about a day), so evaporation will be quite relevant to the overall consistency of the soup, too. Adding lost water will also add to the temperature inconsistencies.

  • Normal AA or AAA battery, or a CR<something> button? If it is a button cell, try wiping it with alcohol before you insert it. Many modern button cells have a coating that tastes horrible to prevent people (children) from taking them into the mouth. I’ve noticed that on some brands, this coating measurably increases the resistance of the cell, not only reducing the the power it can deliver, but als making it appear “emptier” than they are ofor the measuring circuits. Wiping off the coating with alcohol (90% isopropanol) expanded the cells’ life (in a kitchen scale to boot!) significantly.

  • A friend of ours was approaching her 40th birthday. But she only admitted to having a “round” birthday, and even forbade her kids to talk about mommys age, even though we made a big production to learn her age with trick questions and all. And then we told her that if she keeps mum about her age, we’ll just guesstimate it.

That’s how she got sent loads of cards for her 50th birthday. She was a bit pissed when we arrived for the party. And then we handed her the real cards for her 40th.
